Bonhill photographer scoops award

A PHOTOGRAPHER who made the snap decision to pick up a camera just four years ago has once again been hailed by the industry’s leading lights.

Beverly Buchan decided to follow her dad Graham into the family photography business following stints as a receptionist – but admits even she has been surprised by her success in such a short space of time.

The Bonhill mum-of-two, who specialises in portrait photography, has scooped two merits from The Master Photographers Association for her shots of the beach at Lossiemouth and a portrait of Alexandria man Joe Carson with his guitar.

The same beach image and a portrait of a little girl from the Borders, who travelled up specially to have her photo taken by Beverly, were awarded merits by The British Institute for Professional Photographers.

Last year, the 30-year-old was nominated for two top industry awards, claiming the runner-up spot in the Noritsu Awards and securing a place in the finals of the Scottish Regional Image Awards.

She said: “It’s great to be recognised for my work, especially since I’ve not been working in the industry for very long. I love what I do, I think I’ve got the best job in the world.”

Beverly, who has built up a reputation for her stunning images of bouncing babies and cute kids, says demand for adult portraits is now soaring.

She added: “We’re seeing more and more young people and adults come to us to have their portraits, down from boys with their cars to young girls in their prom dresses.

“My dad’s always using the phrase ‘capturing characters’ and that’s what I hope I’m doing.”
