Dumbarton teen honoured for hospice work

DUMBARTON teenager Christopher Smith was honoured at the House of Lords recently for his voluntary work.

Christopher, of Highmains Avenue, was chosen to represent Scotland at the finals of the prestigious Make a Difference Awards.

The 18-year-old was one of only two Boys’ Brigade members from across the UK to be recognised at the event, at which Sir Alex Ferguson presented the prizes.

It was Christopher’s commitment to helping sick children at Robin House hospice in Balloch which earned him a place at the awards.

The former Dumbarton Academy pupil has volunteered at the Children’s Hospice Association Scotland centre for the past year.

His BB captain, Alan Prior, was so impressed with Christopher’s dedication that he nominated him for the award, set up to mark the BBs’ 125th anniversary.

To gain his Queen’s Badge – the highest accolade in the brigade – Christopher, a member of the 1st/2nd Dumbarton Company, had to complete 40 hours of community work, and chose the hospice.

Even after he achieved his badge, Christopher stayed on as a valued volunteer.

The teenager, who joined the BBs just four years ago, begins studies at medical school in Aberdeen in the autumn.
