Indoor bowling: Mixed fortunes for three Dumbarton teams

ALL three Dumbarton Indoor teams were in league action last Saturday, with a mixed bag of results.

Dumbarton’s gents team played host to Galleon on Saturday, and despite the visitors establishing an early 10-shot lead, the home side hit back to win a close match 89-79.

Individual rink scores (Dumbarton skips first): B Neeson 20, G Peacock 24; K Tait 29, D Crawford 12; G Sloan 22, C Wilson 23; K Paton 18, J McCabe 20.

Next Saturday the gents have no game.

The ladies’ side travelled to Wishaw to play Lanarkshire IBC and made a promising start, but ended up losing 86-66.

Individual rink scores (Dumbarton skips first): M Stickings 20, I Hill 20; A Christie 19, F Kerr 17; R Murray 16, M Ritchie 27; M Morrison 11, K Watt 22.

The ladies are at home game next week when they play Inverclyde IBC.

And the seniors were also on the road, travelling to West of Scotland IBC for their latest league game.

However, after the home side made the better start to the game, the visitors never fully recovered, and lost 77-53.

Individual rink scores (Dumbarton skips first): R Kennedy 9, J Campbell 25; J Marsland 24, G Caughey 14; S Shields 14, G Murphy 17; D Cole 6, W Cameron 21.

Next Saturday the senior gents are at home to Prestwick IBC.

NEXT Sunday, the Under 25 National Championships will be held at East Kilbride and Abbeywiew IBC. Representing Dumbarton will be Kevin Anderson and Emma McIntyre.

And staying with the younger bowlers, the Scottish Young Bowlers Junior Masters playdowns were played last Sunday at Falkirk, with 24 bowlers taking part. Representing Dumbarton was Richard O'Malley.

This competition has a great incentive for young bowlers, as the two finalists are invited to play their final on national television during the Scottish Open Tournament at Perth IBC.

And it was so near and yet so far for Richard, who reached the semi-final against Blantyre only to lose two sets to nil.

Nevertheless, this was a great achievement for young Richard and will surely spur him on to greater successes.

The players from the outdoor Ladies Lomond League and Michael Law Trophy events gathered at Dumbarton and District IBC last Thursday, for the presentation of the trophies and medals. This was carried out by Mrs Frances Law.

As the competition was not completed last year due to the inclement weather, it was completed at the start of this year’s season, with the Vale of Leven winning.

Betty Tulloch

EVERY bowler who plays in this district knew Betty Tulloch. Betty was a member of Cardross BC for about 15 years and held the position of ladies match secretary.

Although Betty was a keen bowler, she was better known for her catering. She did this for many bowling clubs and especially in Helensburgh Week when all paths led to Cardross BC for meals.

Indeed, she was catering for the Festival of Remembrance in the Victoria Hall, Helensburgh when she collapsed and sadly did not recover.

Betty will be sadly missed by the bowling fraternity, whose thoughts go to her husband Alistair, her daughter Barbara and her two grandchildren Andrew and Bethany.
