Cricket: Vale of Leven Cricket Club get win

VALE of Leven Cricket Club won their first league game of the season on Saturday away to Garscube in a high-scoring match.

It’s been a long time coming, but a much better all-round performance with both bat and ball made sure of the win, despite their hosts making a splendid start.

Vale put the Glasgow side in to bat first, but Garscube were soon racking up the runs, scoring 129 without loss.

And it was veteran bowler Robbie Bruce who broke the deadlock by taking the first wicket, and no sooner had the first wicket fallen than more followed, with all catching opportunities offered to Vale being taken.

However, the home team still managed to amass 227 runs before their innings ended in the 46th over. The wickets were shared around, Robin Hendry, Alex McAdam and Robbie Bruce with two each and Mohammed Qayyum with four.

Vale took up the bat and the score raced to 78 before Mohammed lost his wicket for a fine 39. Michael Glew then took over as anchor man and the runs continued to flow.

In the end the Vale reached their target of 228 with eight overs, and five wickets, to spare.. Michael finished with a magnificent undefeated 126, belying the theory that the anchor man digs in and protects his wicket, with run-scoring a distant objective

The Vale is the only cricket club in West Dunbartonshire and is looking to recruit new players, especially from the Clydebank, Dumbarton and Vale of Leven areas.

The Vale are always looking for anyone who may wish to take the game up or are looking for a club to play for.
