BMX: Bonhill man wants to get local people on their bikes

A BONHILL man is looking to secure funding to help local people get on their bikes.

Kenny Scullion hopes that Titans BMX can get the financial backing it needs to improve its Clydebank track.

The club, which features several talented local youngsters, also needs money to travel to tournaments and build a clubhouse.

And 38-year-old Kenny, of Broomhill Crescent, hopes that potential backers will rally round the club as the sport continues to grow in popularity.

He said: “I started racing in 1980 and, although I stopped racing for a spell in about 1989, I’ve been on the club board for the last 25 years.

“I’ve also been running the Clydebank track for the last five years since it opened, and the club operates on Thursday and Sunday evenings.

“The track was initially built by the Environment Trust and is proving very popular right now. We have a group of very talented youngsters who take part.

“Right now we are trying to add another straight on to the track and are looking for funding to help us with that.

“We are also looking to get a clubhouse built for the members to get changed, have showers and just relax.

“There are also tournaments coming up in England, and we will need to finance our transport and places to stay.

“But the track needs brought up to 2009 specifications, as it is already years behind.”

BMX biking first featured in the Olympic Games last year, which saw interest in the sport grow to its largest extent in over 20 years.

Titans is staging BMX sessions throughout the summer for cyclists with British Cycling membership who want to practice their skills.

Membership of the club costs just £5 for under-16s and £10 for riders aged 16 or over. After that, each race costs £3 for under-16s to enter while the older riders take part for £5.

Trophies are presented to those who take part in the last four days of each series and have the best results for six of the last eight rounds.
