Tennis: Refurbished Helensburgh courts opened

THE newly-resurfaced courts at Helensburgh Tennis Club were officially opened by Dumbarton MSP Jackie Baillie on Sunday.

She praised the committee and membership for the club's sound financial position, and quipped that if the Scottish Parliament building ever needed to be replaced perhaps the club's financial team could offer some advice.

The Suffolk Street club finds itself the envy of other tennis clubs throughout Scotland as it boasts seven floodlit courts, a custom-built clubhouse and a large coaching programme suitable for all levels.

Club president Mike Bews paid tribute to the four members whose vision almost 20 years ago enabled the club to be in the sound financial position it currently enjoys.

Donald Fullarton, Lawrence Hill, Gordon Whitelaw and Nick White were members of the club's development committee in the late 1980s and early 1990s and masterminded the transformation of the club's facilities.

Following the presentation, over 40 members took part in the annual voters and non-voters tournament. In the final David Reid and Anne McKelvie beat Christine Sreeves and Ciaran Losh in a nail-biting final.
