Helensburgh Rugby Club beat Trinity Accies

HELENSBURGH returned to action after six weeks out on Saturday – and got their first victory since October against Trinity Accies.

The scoring started when Stewart Holmes produced a beautiful chip over the encroaching opposition backs to race through himself for a fabulous try between the posts.Chris Black converted.

But Trinity soon fought back when a penalty allowed them to kick deep into the Greens 22. The ensuing line-out was won and the visiting pack ran in a try, which was converted for a 7-7 scoreline.

That brought on some heavy pressure from Trinity, but as half time approached, Helensburgh gained some belief.

However, that came to nothing and the game was still deadlocked at half time.

Burgh earned a penalty early in the second half, and although it was 40 metres out, Black made no mistake and his team were back in front. Jonny Gibson then won another penalty, which Black kicked superbly, again from distance, to make it 13-7.

And he then made it 11 points for himself by slotting home another penalty out wide to put clear daylight between Burgh and their opponents.

Neil Sloan just missed out on a try before all-out attack from Trinity gave them a drop goal, which also earned them a bonus point.

But Helensburgh held out for a vital 16-10 win, which they deserved for a brave second half display.
