Lee Westwood to bring golf tour to Buchanan Castle in Drymen

Ryder Cup-winning golfer Lee Westwood is bringing his own competition for youngsters to a Loch Lomond club this summer.

The former world number one is to stage the Lee Westwood Golf Tour event at Buchanan Castle Golf Club in Drymen on Friday, July 19.

All golfers who were aged under 21 on January 1, 2013, can apply, as long as they have a recognised handicap of 28 or less for boys and 36 or less for girls.

The nationwide tour is designed to give young golfers throughout the UK an opportunity to play on some of the best golf courses each tour area has to offer.

A spokeswoman for the club said: “Buchanan Castle Golf Club in Drymen is delighted to announce that it is hosting a Lee Westwood Tour junior event.

“The event is part of a new and exciting golf tour for junior golfers. It will provide an opportunity for young golfers to play a tour just like their golfing heroes.

“This yet again confirms Buchanan Castle Golf Club’s commitment to junior golf.

“As well as their ongoing support of the Clubgolf programme, which involves delivering within the local primary schools, the club hosted the Scottish Under-14 Championship in 2012.

“Buchanan Castle believes strongly in encouraging junior and adult participation and is launching their new family academy membership at the open week from April 16-21.”

The competition will allow youngsters to play in various categories, with prizes coming from some of Lee’s existing sponsors.

The players will also be competing in an order of merit for their playing category, with the winner of each section invited to a grand final at the end of the season.

And young golfers on the tour will be learning from a master – Lee has won 22 European Tour events.

He said: “The tour brand will create a national network of golf events for junior golfers and provide them an opportunity to play a tour just like their golfing heroes.

“And who knows? Perhaps one day some of them will go on to compete on the European Tour.”

The tour is also operating a volunteer scheme, which provides the opportunity to go along and help out as a controller on the day.
