Cardross golfer to represent Motherwell FC

A CARDROSS golfer has qualified to represent Motherwell FC in the final of a golf tournament for football fans – despite never having played alongside his partner before.

Andy O’Connor will head out to Portugal alongside Cameron Wilson to fly the flag for the Fir Park club in the Pro:Fantastic golf challenge.

They will be up against fans of other Premier League teams from both Scotland and England, having won the semi final at Cawder Golf Club in Motherwell.

TV cameras attended the event and the final, due to take place later this year, is also due to be televised.

Andy, 58, said: “We were hoping to win but really we were just going to take part and see what happened.

“It was one of the best golf days I’ve ever attended. The course was excellent, the TV cameras added an air of excitement and Frank McAvennie was waiting at the final green to welcome us off the course which was a really nice touch. It was a fabulous day.

“I can play better than I played in the qualifier and Cameron left some shots out on the course, so I’d be disappointed if we’re not challenging.

“Also, I play golf in Malaga every year so might have a better idea than most of the conditions we’ll be facing in Portugal and how to play out there.

“I’ve already told Cameron he’ll have to come over and play my course beforehand and we’ll have to get some practice in.”
