Helensburgh's Gary Orr picks up Dubai Desert Classic cheque

THERE were mixed fortunes for local golfers at the Dubai Desert Classic last week.

Helensburgh’s Gary Orr picked up his second cheque of the season with a 36th placed finish, but former Cardross man Ross Bain crashed out at the halfway cut.

Orr carded rounds of 71,70, 71 and 72 to finish on four-under-par for the tournament – a staggering 15 shots more than first-time European Tour winner, Rory McIlroy.

The top 40 finish earned Orr 13,781 – placing him 140th in the Race to Dubai standings.

However, it was less positive news for Ross Bain who failed to capitalise on a sponsors’ invitation for the event, carding rounds of 72 and 73 to miss the one-under-par cut mark.
