A CARDROSS amateur golf sensation is looking to seal a place on the European Tour this week – if the weather holds off.
Scott Henry, who represents Cardross Golf Club, made it through European Tour Qualifying School stage one at Dundonald Links in September after carding a superb 69 in his final round – one of just seven scores in the 60s throughout the entire four rounds.
Now the 21-year-old is in Montenmedio, Spain, hoping to play his best to make final qualifying in Catalunya on November 13 – thanks to some welcome help from the Scottish Golf Union.
He said: “I went to Portugal on Friday and spent a few days there before I headed to my hotel in Montenmedio on Sunday night.
“The Scottish Golf Union are funding my trip here, so I’m with another amateur, Wallace Booth, which is really great for me.”
Scott, who is well known among his peers as a ‘boy wonder’, will tee off his European Tour challenge today (Wednesday) and is confident that he has taken his A game to Spain.
“I played the course on Tuesday, which was good,” he said.
“I feel confident about my game going into this week. It’s a very important time, but I do feel that I am playing well at the moment.”
However, the young Scot will hope that the par-72 course avoids the torrential rain which overshadowed the 2008 European Tour season finale at Valderama last week.
It was so bad that rounds two and three were suspended.
“When I played on Monday, although it was a good practice day, the course was very wet as there has been so much rain recently,” he explained. But I’m hoping the weather gets a bit better over the next few days.”
The former Scottish Amateur Strokeplay Champion, who has openly expressed his hunger to be the best, not only hopes to secure his card but aims to turn professional by the end of the month.
He added: “If I secure Challenge Tour or European Tour playing rights next season, I will definitely turn professional after tour school, but we’ll have to wait and see.”
