Helensburgh golfer ends one shot off big tour finale

HELENSBURGH’S Gary Orr missed out on qualification for the European Tour Championship at Valderama next week – by a single shot.

The 41-year-old, who needed a top 20 finish in the Castellon Masters on Sunday to secure a top 60 slot in the Order of Merit and a ticket to the Tour Championship, finished just outside his target in 24th place.

The Scot, who eventually finished 64th in the Order of Merit with a total of 472,033 euros, carded rounds of 70, 67, 69 and 70 for eight-under-par at the Club de Campo del Mediterraneo – 12 shots behind eventual winner Sergio Garcia.

But the Helensburgh man remained positive about his 16th year on the European Tour, particularly when it comes to securing his tour card for next season.

“My main concern was just getting my card back and having a decent year,” he said.

“As for getting into the Volvo Masters, I’m not that bothered, because I’m happy with how my year has panned out.”
