Marner double seals it for St Patrick's

ST PAT’S gained revenge for their Scottish Amateur Cup exit by knocking Arthurlie out of the Central Scottish Cinema Cup.

They started well and opened the scoring when Adam Monaghan delivered a super cross into the danger area for Sean Marner to head home.

United came back strongly, with keeper Chris Connolly doing well to deny Sean McGinley before Gavin Naismith rattled the bar.

But Saints stung them with a second goal after the interval, Martin Currie scoring after the keeper fumbled a Darren MacKinnon shot.

Again Arthurlie responded strongly, and this time, they pulled one back. A poor clearance out of defence saw St Pat’s punished by Gary McKenzie’s vicious shot.

It was still 2-1 with five minutes to go, but nobody could have predicted what drama would unfold in what was left of the match.

The home side notched a remarkable third through Brian Deeley, whose free kick from the halfway line evaded everybody and bounced into the net.

But United just wouldn’t give up and, when Derek Kennedy scored a suspiciously offside second goal, it was game on again.

Then Connolly made a superb goal-line save before Marner crashed home a stunning fourth.

The lads also celebrated a Central League play-off victory with a 2-0 win against Spartans on Monday night.

Meanwhile, St Pat’s B team secured a semi-final spot in the Greater Glasgow Challenge Cup.

A glorious first half hat-trick from Chris Docherty and a goal from both the Bissett twins helped the team to record a 7-0 victory over Hamilton FP.
