Dumbarton FC's Ben Gordon hopes for successful return to action

BEN Gordon hopes that Cowdenbeath’s return to action won’t give the league leaders the edge when they visit Dumbarton on Saturday.

The Sons defender headed the injury-time winner when the sides met at the Rock in September 2008, and is hoping for another win over the Fife club on Saturday.

But Cowden have already returned to action after the big freeze with a 2-2 draw at East Fife on Saturday, while Sons were again idle due to the postponement of their visit to Brechin City.

Ben said: “It will be a hard game, as Cowdenbeath are playing well and are top of the table. They are a strong team, and gave us four tough games last season.

“Hopefully it will work for us that we have had a rest while they returned to action on Saturday. It’s hard to say what will happen.

“All the players are desperate for a game, as we have not played since the Stirling Albion game in mid-December.

“There is only so much training we can do before we start really missing games. It will be good to get the sharpness back when we return to action.

“Fortunately we have had the indoor facility at Toryglen Football Centre, which has helped us keep in shape in recent weeks.

“We’ve been lucky in that we’ve been able to use it – it’s been all over the news that lots of teams are using it.”

Ben, playing only his second season in senior football, is open-minded about where Sons can hope to finish the season.

He admits that the coming fixture pile-up will be tough, but is hopeful they can come through it as well as last season’s run of games.

He added: “We made a poor start to the season, but have now picked up and hopefully that will give us confidence for the games ahead.

“We just have to take each game at a time and see how it goes.

“We have enough quality to be in this league and hopefully that will show in the second half of the season.

“Whether the fixture pile-up will have an impact really depends on results. I think we have a good enough squad to cope with that kind of schedule.”
