Dumbarton FC's Andy Geggan out after operation

ANDY Geggan could be set for a few weeks out of action – even though he hasn’t kicked a ball for Dumbarton in over a month.

The midfielder is poised to spend some time on the sidelines while he recovers from a recent operation to remove his appendix.

It is the latest frustration for the 22-year-old, as Sons were again left kicking their heels on Saturday when the match away to Brechin City was called off.

They have not played since the 2-2 draw at Stirling Albion on Tuesday, December 15 – something Andy admits is annoying the players.

He said: “It’s certainly getting frustrating without a match. It’s murder to think we’ve got a game at the start of the week, and the next thing it’s cancelled, but there’s not much we can do.

“I was getting terrible pains in my stomach recently, but I thought it was just something I had eaten. However, I went to the doctor, and he said I had to go straight to the hospital.

“It turned out that I needed my appendix removed. I don’t think I will be back in action until about mid-February, but hopefully it will be earlier than that.”

Sons hope to finally return to action on Saturday, when second division leaders Cowdenbeath visit the Rock.

And Andy hopes that the game can be the start of a run of results that can possibly push his team towards the promotion places.

He added: “I don’t think the season has been as bad as has been made out sometimes. I reckon we will finish in the play-off places – at least.

“I feel confident we will really kick off once we return to action. The players are desperate for the games to resume and start picking up points.

“We are at the midway point and are in fifth place. We would have taken that at the start of the season, but we have high expectations overall.

“We have been beaten by some teams who we think we are better than, and we hope to prove that in the second half of the season.

“A long run of fixtures in March could have an impact, but it is all about how we start it. A few years ago we were going well, but it started going wrong at that stage of the season.

“But last year we also had several games in March and went on to win the league, so we know it can be a positive thing as well.”
