SONS’ skipper Gordon Lennon can’t wait to get his hands on the third division trophy on Saturday after Dumbarton play Annan.
Dumbarton are set to be crowned champions, going into their final game with a three-point and 18-goal advantage over East Stirling.
Even if Shire beat Cowdenbeath and Dumbarton lose to Annan, they would need to perform the highly unlikely feat of overturning the massive goal difference.
Saturday’s 6-0 win over Elgin City means Sons are just about over the finish line, and Gordon is relishing the trip to Annan.
He said: “I am still buzzing – it’s a fantastic achievement.
“Obviously it’s not impossible for East Stirling to catch us, but we just need to clear one more obstacle.
“After the 2-0 defeat to Annan in March, we took a step back and tried to pick out where we were going wrong, and put it right. Realistically we were looking to ensure a play-off place at first.
“But as the games went on, the performances started to turn and before we knew it we were up there. It’s amazing what confidence and belief has done for us.
“I don’t think anybody could have seen us scoring 10 goals without reply in two games towards the end of the season.
“Without a doubt, lifting the trophy on Saturday would be the highlight of my career. You don’t get many highs like that in football but this will be a stand-out.
“Nothing I have ever achieved in senior football will come close to matching the experience that awaits me at the final whistle on Saturday if everything works out.”
