ROSS Clark was the big winner at Saturday’s Sons Supporters Trust awards dance – but nearly lost out on the top goalscorer trophy.
The midfielder’s five-goal lead at the top of the scoring chart was reduced to just one after Derek Carcary’s amazing four-goal performance against Elgin City on Saturday.
As well as top goalscorer, Clark also took home the fans’ player of the year award, away fans’ player of the year and Sons View player of the year.
And he’s now relishing lifting the third division trophy after Saturday’s game at Annan, having feared that Dumbarton had blown it.
The 6-0 win just about clinches the title for Sons, and Ross, scorer of 14 goals this season, admits it will be the best achievement of his career.
He said: “As long as we win, I don’t really care who gets the goals, and I’m pleased for Derek getting four.
“This season is definitely up there with anything I’ve experienced in my career, in fact it’s probably at the top.
“I won the league with Queen’s Park when I was 16, but this is right up there. I thought we’d blown it but I’ve been proven wrong.”
Despite Sons having a three-point and 18-goal advantage over East Stirling, Ross isn’t getting carried away just yet.
He, like the management team and the rest of the squad, will be looking for the three points against Annan so that they can start the title party on a high.
Ross, who recently had a spell out with injury, added: “If anything, I think the Elgin game was better than the Forfar one.
“Last week was brilliant but against Elgin we were outstanding, especially in the first half, and showed why we are top.
“We don’t want to count our chickens yet but we’re happy with where we are and looking forward to the Annan game.
“We will definitely be looking for the three points and to keep our clean sheet record going. You could say it’s a must-win game!
“The players who came in have done well and they produced a great run when I wasn’t playing, so I was happy to come back into the side.”
