BEN Gordon admits Dumbarton’s opener on Saturday could easily have been classed as an own goal – but he’s claiming it as his.
The defender headed Sons in front against Stenhousemuir, with Ross Clark’s later effort sealing a vital 2-0 win for Sons.
Ben’s goal was his fifth of the season and he’s definitely claiming it despite suggestions it may have been an own goal by Stenny’s Alan Reid.
Only three Sons players have scored more goals this season than the big centre half, who was still playing amateur football this time last year.
He said: “It’s just happened this season! The corners are finding me more, and are a bit more of a threat as a result.
“The first goal is definitely mine, despite the Stenny player touching it last. I celebrated it like it was my own and I’ll definitely take it.
“The game went well for us. Maybe in the first half Stenny had more of the play, but we felt more comfortable after that as we had the wind advantage.
“The league has been like this all season. There have been times when we’ve thought we’ve been out of it, but we feel confident now.
“But we are just taking it one at a time. We face five massive games and we will just take them as they come.
“With two away victories recorded last week and no goals conceded, we are looking forward to the final push.
“We were glad to hear that Cowden had dropped points at home to Elgin City. I certainly wasn’t expecting that.”
Ben also had his first experience of a midweek game at Elgin last Tuesday night, with the players returning home after 2am following the 2-0 win.
Sons face Berwick at home this Saturday and the 23-year-old is hoping for a win to please the fans after their fantastic efforts at Ochilview.
He added: “I’ve definitely never had an away day like that. I obviously played at Elgin earlier this season, but this one being midweek, it was a long day.
“After our last home game, against Annan, we need to get a good result for the home support. Berwick are a good side and will give us a tough game.
“The fans have always been great, coming in their numbers and it helps a lot, both when we are doing well and when things aren’t going to plan.”
