Dumbarton FC could go top at Stenny

THE big one is here – Dumbarton are back on the road on Saturday to face league leaders Stenhousemuir.

Victory on the plastic pitch at Ochilview will see Sons reach the top of the third division for the first time this season, but they do of course face a very tough assignment against the Warriors, who have led the league for most of the campaign.

On Saturday, Stenny won 3-0 away to Montrose despite having several players out injured. They also won their last meeting with Sons this season, 2-1 at the Rock.

Interest in the top of the table clash is bound to be high and Dumbarton are hoping for a large travelling support. The Sons Supporters Trust bus is fully booked and leaves The Counting House in Dumbarton High Street at 1pm.

But that’s only half of a weekend double header for the fans, with Sons’ under-19s in Scottish Youth Cup action on Sunday.

The youngsters welcome Edinburgh City to the Strathclyde Homes Stadium with the teams competing for a place in the last 16, where the winners could face Premier League opposition.

Kickoff on Sunday is at 1pm and admission is free.

Meanwhile, Liam Cusack came off the bench to get his first goal for Dumbarton in Saturday’s 5-2 win over Berwick.

The teenage winger has been behind Stevie Murray for a first team place this season but made the most of his opportunity as a sub against the Borderers.

He said: “I’m happy with how it went. I’ve always been looking for my first goal for Dumbarton and I’m pleased that it’s now come.

“We’d been doing well at the start of the season without scoring many goals but it’s happening for us now.

“We are confident ahead of the Stenhousemuir game and I think we can go there and get the three points.”
