Ben Gordon gets late goal for Dumbarton FC

BEN Gordon didn’t come to Dumbarton as a goalscorer – but headed his second goal in two games on Saturday.

The big centre half finished off David Gray’s cross in the dying seconds to give Sons a 2-1 win over Cowdenbeath, who themselves had scored in added time.

Ben, who signed from amateur football during pre-season, admitted he feared the game was over after the Blue Brazil’s late leveller.

He said: “I didn’t think we had the chance to win it. I thought we had dropped two points again, but I’m delighted to get the goal.

“We showed a lot of fight and knew we could come back from losing the equaliser. We always think we can score.

“I don’t know what’s brought on the scoring streak in me, but the most important thing is that somebody scores and we win.

“We played well in the first half but in the second half we let ourselves down a bit and let Cowdenbeath into it. I’m just happy as long as we win every week.”

Ben, 22, is looking forward to another big game for Sons this weekend when they travel to face Forfar Athletic.

Dumbarton’s victory on Saturday lifted them to third place in the table, five points behind leaders Stenhousemuir.

But the third division is already shaping up to be a close competition, something Ben expected from the start.

He added: “It will be a tough game at Forfar. They won again on Saturday against Annan and I’ve heard they are a good side this year.

“But hopefully Saturday will push us on. Victories bring teams together so hopefully we will kick on from here.

“The league was always going to be a tight one, but I think we are good enough to win every game. As long as we do that we will do all right.”
