Bowls: Dumbarton men pick up impressive win

AFTER a disappointing result the previous week against bottom of the league West of Scotland, Dumbarton’s senior gents had the unenviable task of facing a Prestwick side which had won all six games so far this season.

A win against the league leaders was a tall order, but would certainly restore morale in the side if it could be achieved.

The game turned out to be a game of two halves, with Prestwick always holding the advantage during the first half of the game.

But the Dumbarton team stormed back to win 61-53, making up for many of the previous weeks’ disappointments.

Individual rink scores (Dumbarton skips first): Robert Kennedy 16, Cliff Eade 13; Jim Marsland 19, Jim Fortune 11; Stewart Shields 14, Michael Higgins 13; David Cole 12, Martin Sturgeon 16.

Next Saturday the seniors have a home fixture against Cumbernauld.

THE ladies played host to Inverclyde last Saturday, and recorded a thumping victory, 126-44.

Indiviual rink scores (Dumbarton skips first): Annette Christie 25, Irene Aitken 12; Margaret Stickings 31, Kath Bowater 16; Mary Morrison 39, Nan Black 5; Rita Murray 31, Jean Galbreath 11.

As Cowal IBC have withdrawn from the league, the Dumbarton ladies will not have a game next Saturday. The gents, who had no fixture last week, have an away fixture against Irvine.

LAST weekend the SIBA announced the Junior Under 25 trial teams, and included are Kevin Anderson and Graeme Sloan from Dumbarton and District.

The trial game will take place at Cumbernauld IBC on Sunday, November 22, at noon.

Michelle Keenan, also from Dumbarton and District IBC, has been selected to play in the ladies’ Under 25 trial game, which will also take place on Sunday, November 22, at West Lothian IBC from noon.

BOTH the ladies and gents national under-25 singles competitions took place last weekend, at Abbeyview and East Kilbride respectively.

In the gents competition, representing Dumbarton and District was Kevin Anderson, but it wasn’t his day as he lost in the first game to Graeme Armour of Paisley 21-8.

Representing the ladies was Emma McIntyre, playing against Lisa Barratt from West Lothian IBC, who was the stronger of the two and won 21-12.

This was a good effort from Emma, as Lisa is a very experienced player at this level.
