Helen holds her nerve to reach West semi-finals

THE West of Scotland Women’s Bowling Association recently held the last 16 of their competition at Johnstone Bowling Club.

Local bowlers were involved in all five championships, with the following results:

Singles: Oban BC 21, Hillington BC 14; Two-Bowl Pairs: Dumbarton 10, Linthouse 19; Pairs: Tarbert 13, Cardonald 14; Triples: Townend 7, Ardgowan 23; Fours: Eastfield 6, Cardonald 18

The winners of these games played in the quarter finals at Drumoyne BC, Glasgow, two days later, when Helen MacLean of Oban played against Brookfield’s Helen Dobson.

The game was a very close and competitive one where the two ladies peeled on two occasions, the last one being at 16 all.

However, Helen managed to hold her nerve and finished the 21-16 winner. She now plays in the semi-finals at Vale of Leven BC next Wednesday.

l DIXON BC held their mixed pairs competition last Sunday, with 22 pairs taking part. All teams played four games of five ends and the highest-scoring four teams went through to the semi finals.

The first semi final was played between Bunty and Finlay Wilson (Dumbarton BC) and Frank and Jean Bell (Renton and Argyle BC).

In the second semi Lorna and Gerry McCarthy (Argyle BC) played against Mary Degnan and George White (Argyle BC).

Both semi finals were played in a competitive manner with the Wilson and Bell teams coming out on top. The final was a closely contested game ending with Jean and Frank Bell coming out the winners.

l THE Scottish Women's Bowling Association are holding the National Finals from this Friday until Sunday at Northfield BC in Ayr. Best wishes go to all those players who are representing this district and hopefully bringing home some silver.
