Prison is "inappropriate" for people with severe mental health problems, according to a report.
There are at least 315 prisoners in Scotland's jails who have a severe and enduring mental illness - a total of 4.5% of the prison population.
And Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Prisons Dr Andrew McLellan revealed the number of inmates with such problems is rising. His report into mental health problems in Scotland's jails also warned that imprisonment could exacerbate the mental health problems some prisoners have.
