NHS finances 'improving'

The financial position of the NHS is improving in Scotland but it faces tough times ahead, watchdogs have warned.

Health boards are now less reliant on one-off sources of funding, and only one - NHS Western Isles - failed to hit a financial target last year.

But major challenges lie ahead as boards receive smaller funding increases while having to increase their efficiency savings. The pressures include pay deals, rising drug and fuel costs, and the costs of cutting waiting times while complying with European rules on working hours.
