4,000 jobs secured - Swinney

Finance secretary John Swinney has claimed 4,000 jobs will be secured through £260 million of spending on public projects.

However, Mr Swinney said efficiency savings to Scotland's budget of £1 billion over two years in the Chancellor's pre-budget report represent the biggest cuts to schools and hospitals in a generation.

Roads projects, schools and the new Borders rail link are among the areas to benefit from the funding brought forward through measures set out in last week's report.
