Big-hearted Alexandria pupils boost links with Sri Lanka

PUPILS and staff at an Alexandria school pulled out all the stops for their friends in Sri Lanka.

They staged fundraising events which collected £500 for the De La Salle School which they have been supporting since the tsunami tragedy.

St Mary’s Primary 4 and 5 teachers Theresa Finnegan and Margaret Croft have spent their summer holidays working at the school in the country which is currently involved in a civil war.

And the primary has now developed close links with the school and its head teacher Brother Tarcisius, who visited Alexandria recently to say a personal thanks to pupils and staff.

While he was here, the school presented the proceeds from a series of fundraising events including cake and candy stall, bob-a-job, raffle and sponsored obstacle course by Theresa.

Margaret said: “Theresa and I have been out to the school in Sri Lanka during our holidays which is how we got the link started.

“The school there is very short of resources and the money we raised will help buy them equipment.

“Brother Tarcisius visited the school and went round to thank everyone for their support.”
