Canvassing views on huge parade

I REFER to the advert for the public procession that has been applied for by the Provincial Grand Black Chapter of Scotland.

The application is with regard to a public procession in Dumbarton to be held on Saturday, August 8, for 37 marching bands, flute and accordion, with an estimated 2000-3000 people taking part in the procession. I assume that supporters would supplement this number.

Bands originate from all over Scotland, although mainly the west, and Northern Ireland. I have lived in Dumbarton for 20 years and I am not aware of this type of procession, on this scale, having taken place in that time.

As one of the local elected members for Dumbarton, I have been asked whether or not I have any objections to this event taking place. Of course, I am aware of the disruption this event will cause, and the potential for anti-social behaviour, but perhaps the increase in visitors may add benefit to local businesses at a time when they can well appreciate it?

The proposed route is Lime Road - Poplar Road - Townend Road - Church Street - High street - Bridge Street - Westbridgend - Glasgow Road - Townend Road - Bankend Road - Lime Road - Poplar Road, start time being 12.15pm.
